精氨酸酶是尿素循环的关键元素，催化L-精氨酸生成尿素和L-鸟氨酸，进而促进胶原合成和细胞增殖。精氨酸代谢是先天性和适应性免疫反应的关键调节因子，参与多形核粒细胞(PMN)的抗菌效应途径。在PMN凋亡过程中，微环境中的精氨酸被耗尽，会抑制T细胞和自然杀伤细胞的增殖和细胞因子的分泌。精氨酸酶1(ARG1)是精氨酸酶家族中的一个成员，分子量35 - 40 kDa。它表达于多种类型细胞，包括红细胞、肝细胞、中性粒细胞、平滑肌和巨噬细胞。人AGR1的长度为322个氨基酸(aa)。其酶区由9 - 309位氨基酸组成，含有两个Mn原子。ARG1单体具有中等活性，但作为105kDa的同型三聚体，是具有高活性的。
